COSI & Vertical Adventures

posted Mar 12, 2014, 3:41 PM by Troop 54   [ updated Mar 4, 2015, 7:10 AM ]

On March 8th the troop went to COSI, Cabela’s, & Vertical Adventures in Columbus, Ohio. It was a long car ride but we made it. I would say the 1 ½ hour ride was worth it! We had a great time at COSI. We saw a lot of cool things, and we did a lot of exciting things like lifting a car! COSI had different exhibits and they all were awesome. In their gadget exhibit you could mess around with gears & lasers. There was an energy exhibit that would send electric pulse through and shock you. Lots of the scouts had fun with it. They have a unicycle to ride, it is up high on a cable and you pedal across it. You are harnessed in of course.

After our search for a pizza place we went to Cabela’s. We took a tour of the store and we also got to learn about backpacks, water filters, tents, sleeping bags & more! Then we were off to Vertical Adventures where we went rock climbing. Even the leaders had fun climbing with us. We got to play foosball & ping pong when we weren’t climbing.  We stayed up until 2am (technically 3am because of daylight savings time). I believe we all had a really great time!

Camp Brrrrrrrrrch!

posted Feb 19, 2014, 12:40 PM by Troop 54

Troop 54 went to Camp Birch on the 15th of February. We took about an hour road trip to Yellow Springs to do a cold weather campout! Most of the boys wanted to sleep in the Adirondack, a three-sided wood shelter, a few boys wanted to sleep in tents and a lot of boys wanted to sleep in the cabin. Let me add, the cabin was only heated by a wood burning fireplace. It didn’t have bells & whistles, or “real” heat.  Once realizing how cold it really was 96% of the boys ended up sleeping in the cabin.

Although we didn’t get to do any ourselves, the troop got to watch a tree tapping. We learned it takes 40-50 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup!  We went on a hike around the camp in what seemed to be a foot of snow, there were plenty of wildlife footprints to check out. It wouldn’t have been a real cold weather campout without a few snowball fights, so we had to get a couple of those in while we were there.

Our overnight was completed with what we believe to have been raccoons scratching underneath the cabin next to Mr. Wright’s head. Surprisingly, Mr. Wright's snoring didn’t scare them off! We were cold, but had a great time. We’ve even told our leaders we’d like to go back ... when it’s warm.

Blastcar Racing!

posted Nov 12, 2013, 12:28 PM by Troop 54   [ updated Nov 12, 2013, 12:29 PM ]

Troop 54 will be having their annual Blast Car Race on Dec.14 at the Mt. Pleasant Activities Building at 10:00am.  Blast Car is awesome! The scouts have fun building their cars, and then watching it shoot down the track makes it even more exciting. We look forward to it every year. Just like the Pinewood Derby each boy receives a kit to take home and design just for them, according to the rules of course. Also, the winner gets a trophy to take home if they win the Blast Car race! Troop 54 and Pack 54’s Webelos II are invited to participate this year. Car kits are $10.  For more information, please use the Contact Us link to the left.

Marengo Cave

The troop just got back from Marengo Caves. The scouts had a great time. We saw lots of cool things and learned a lot about the cave and its history.  With our hard hats & headlamps on we walked, waded and crawled through the cave. We all came out wet and muddy which just added to the fun! A memorable time was had by all and I hope to go back again someday.

Loveland Bike Trail

posted Aug 24, 2013, 3:41 PM by Troop 54

Scouts from Troop 54 spent the day riding between Loveland and Morrow on the Loveland Bike Trail.  The scouts learned the "rules of the road" while on the trail, spent a beautiful day pedaling 12 to 26 miles (we split into groups), and finished the day with some shaved ice while watching a presentation about raptors.

Next month, we plan to go camping, canoeing, and riding zip lines!
